Erwin Engst, male, born on November 9th, 1918. He majored in agro pastoral at Cornell University and some other universities. He started to work in China in February 1946, and he went to Yan'an to take part in farm implements reforms and animal husbandry technical work in Auguest

Joan Hinton, female, born on October 20th, 1921. She graduated from Institute of nuclear physics, University of Chicago. In 1948, she was arranged by Song Qingling to Yan'an to take up agriculture and animal husbandry technology work.

In 1953, Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton were appointed the Deputy Director and the technician of Xi'an cattle farm, respectively.

In 1955, Erwin Engst was appointed the deputy director and technician of livestock farms in the Xi'an Caotan farm, and Joan Hinton was appointed a technician. The couple was engaged in the dairy cow quality improvement and farm machinery innovations. Nearly one million sets of the cow green fodder chaff cutter, still one of the leading products of the Caotan farm dairy machinery factory, developed and improved by Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton has been sold.

In April 1966, Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton were transferred to work in Beijing. Erwin Engst was appointed the translator and examiner of China’s film distribution company, and Joan Hinton was appointed the translator and examiner of special articles society external cultures committee.

Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton initiatively required transferring to the Beijing Red Star Commune to engage in the agricultural machinery improvement and dairy mechanization in 1972. On October 17, 1979, on the congratulations meeting, held by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences of 33 anniversary of Erwin Engst and 31 anniversary of Joan Hinton in China, Yang Ligong, the Minister of Ministry of Agricultural Machinery announced that according to the instructions of the leadership of the State Council, Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton, Ministry of Agricultural Machinery consultants, served partly as the Deputy Director of the Livestock Machinery Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences.

In March 1982, the project automatic washing and disinfection of the milk pipeline in charged by Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton was awarded the second prize of scientific and technological achievements by Beijing Municipal People's Government.

In October 12, 1982, Zhou, Jiannan, the Minister of Machinery Industry, issued a letter of appointment to appoint Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton the consultants of the Ministry of Mechanical.

In June 10, 1987, the project dairy farm equipment research and development, cattle farm design and pilot trial in charged by Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton was identified by National Mechanical Committee. Tian Jiyun, Huang Hua, Zou Jiahua, Yang Ligong, Xiang Nan, He Guangyuan, and other leaders attended the acceptance test conference.

On September 7, 1987, Wan, Li, Deputy Prime Minister of China, met Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton. They were awarded the Award for International Cooperation by Kang He, Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

In December 1988, the project dairy farm equipment research and development, cattle farm design and pilot trial presided by Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton was awarded the Science and Technology Progress Award by Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry. Nearly 1,000 sets of the achievement have been promoted in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Changchun, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and other places.

Meanwhile, Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton were invited as the consultants of Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences for their remarkable achievements of in the promotion of cow embryo transplant.

The Milk frozen milk cans project presided by Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton has reached the advanced level of similar products in America, and was produced in Hua Guan Machinery Factory and other factories in Shanghai to replace the imported products, occupying more than 70 percent of China's market share.

In January 18, 1993, Huang Ju, the former mayor of Shanghai, awarded Joan Hinton the Magnolia Award.

In December 15, 1993, He Guangyuan, the Minister of Ministry of Mechanical, issued an appointment letter to invite Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton as the consultants of the Ministry of Mechanical.

Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton worked in cows feeding pilot testing ground of our academy for over 20 years. During this period, they insisted on technological innovation and management innovation, and made significant achievements in dairy cow quality improvement and dairy cow breeding mechanization. In the improvement of dairy cow quality, they always adhered to the strict management, breed dairy cow known in industry-wide. It has been appraised as Beijing's high-quality high-yield dairy farm, with a number of indicators ranking first. Embryos and bulls from the pilot dairy testing ground have become the first choice for dairy cattle quality improvement of China's dairy and bull farms, providing a good service for the research work of research institutes and universities from Beijing, Shanghai and other places.

In January 2003, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences awarded Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton the Personal Contribution Award (Golden Cow Award).

In December 2003, Erwin Engst died at the age of 85 in Beijing.

In June 2010, Joan Hinton died at the age of 89 in Beijing.

Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton have been working hard, not only created stable and high profit efficiency benefits for our academy for successive years, but also received the visits and learning of tens of thousands of people from hundreds of domestic and foreign units.

During the past several decades, Erwin Engst and Joan Hinton loved China and socialism, worked cautiously and conscientiously, and with perseverance, focused on practice, and treated strict on their work, cared for the employers’ work and life, and concerned about the work style of leaders, etc. Their good moral characters are highly admired.
